Medicare plan review
questions, answered.
You don’t need to know all the terminology to ask for help.
When is Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period?
The Annual Enrollment Period, also called Medicare Open Enrollment, runs October 15–December 7 each year. It allows changes to Medicare Advantage and Part D drug coverage, with changes generally effective January 1 of the following year. It is different from your initial Medicare enrollment period.
AEP does not create a universal right to buy a Medicare Supplement policy without underwriting. Medigap enrollment protections follow different rules.
Does a plan review mean I have to change my coverage?
No. A review helps you understand whether your coverage still fits your needs. We can discuss the Annual Notice of Change from your current plan and your questions about costs and coverage. Requesting a consultation does not obligate you to switch plans or enroll.
When should I start thinking about Medicare?
Start before you turn 65 or leave employer coverage. For most people, the Initial Enrollment Period is seven months: the three months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month, and the three months after. Some people qualify earlier, and other enrollment periods may apply.
What’s the difference between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage?
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) helps pay some costs left by Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage is a different way to receive your Part A and Part B benefits through a private plan, usually with drug coverage included. Compare provider access and total costs as well as premiums. Medigap does not pay Medicare Advantage copayments or deductibles.
Can I keep my doctors and prescriptions?
That depends on the coverage you choose. Original Medicare generally lets you use any provider that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans may use provider networks. Drug coverage varies by plan. We help review your providers, medications, and pharmacies before you decide.
Can I buy a Medicare Supplement at any time?
You can apply, but acceptance and price may depend on timing and your circumstances. Your federal six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts in the first month you’re 65 or older and have Part B. Outside that window, medical underwriting may apply unless you have a guaranteed issue right or another applicable protection. State rules may provide additional rights.
Is there a fee to get help from Medicare Universe?
There is no fee for our Medicare guidance or enrollment assistance. Requesting information does not obligate you to enroll. Your insurance premiums and other plan costs still apply.
Do you serve all of Arizona, New Mexico, and California?
Yes. We provide Medicare guidance to clients throughout all three states, including the communities listed above and surrounding areas. Tell us your county and ZIP code so we can review which plan options are available where you live.
Do I need Medicare if I’m still working at 65?
It depends on your coverage and employment situation. Coverage from your or your spouse’s current job may allow you to delay Part B without a late-enrollment penalty. Employer size and coverage type matter; COBRA and retiree coverage do not follow the same rules. Check with your employer’s benefits administrator before changing coverage.
What should I have ready for a Medicare conversation?
Start with your county and ZIP code, the type of coverage you have now, and when you expect to need Medicare coverage. For a later plan comparison, it helps to have a list of your providers, prescriptions, and preferred pharmacies. You do not need to enter Medicare numbers or medical records in the request form.
