Does Medicare move with you to another state? Original Medicare can cover care from providers who take Medicare across the United States. Private coverage needs a separate review: Medicare Advantage and Part D plans have service areas, and a Medigap policy follows different rules. Check every part of your coverage before relocating. Compare Medicare coverage options.
Whether you are moving from California to Arizona or settling in New Mexico, start with your new residential address, expected move date, and current insurance cards. These give your plan the information it needs to explain what happens next.
Check each part of your Medicare coverage
Coverage
What to check before moving
Original Medicare Parts A and B
Find providers at your destination who take Medicare and confirm appointment availability.
Medicare Advantage
Ask whether your new address is in the service area and how the move affects your enrollment.
Stand-alone Part D plan
Check the service area, medication coverage, and pharmacies at your destination.
Medicare Supplement or Medigap
Ask about keeping the policy and any premium change. Medicare SELECT needs a separate service-area review.
Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage differ in provider access. Medigap supplements Original Medicare; it is not the same as a Medicare Advantage plan. Review the coverage comparison and Medigap policy rules.
A qualifying move can give you time to change plans
Moving outside your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan’s service area can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. A move within the service area can also qualify if new plan options become available.
If you notify your plan before moving, the opportunity generally begins the month before your move month and continues for two full months afterward. Ask the plan to confirm your exact deadline and coverage dates. Read Medicare’s moving-related enrollment rules.
For example, if you notify your plan in advance of an April move, the window generally runs from March through June. That does not mean your old plan remains usable at the new address throughout that period. Coordinate the coverage change before scheduling routine care.
Review your new address rather than just the state
A move from Phoenix to Tucson deserves a coverage check, just as a move from San Diego to Albuquerque does. Give your insurer the complete address so it can confirm the service area instead of relying on a familiar carrier name.
Make a short list of the care you expect to need after arriving. Include ongoing treatment, specialists, equipment suppliers, and a pharmacy near your new home. Then ask each prospective plan and provider to confirm the arrangements for the exact plan you are considering.
For a Medicare Advantage plan, review routine care, referrals, prior authorization requirements, and costs outside the network. An insurance company operating in both locations does not establish that your current plan will work the same way in each. Medicare explains provider access under different coverage options.
Take a closer look at Medigap before replacing it
If you have a standard Medigap policy and keep Original Medicare, you can generally keep that policy when moving to another state. Contact the insurer about your address and premium. Medicare SELECT policies have network restrictions and require a closer review when you move out of their service area.
Keeping an existing policy and qualifying for a new policy are different questions. Moving does not automatically give everyone a fresh Medigap Open Enrollment Period. A new application may involve medical underwriting unless a federal or state protection applies. Medicare explains switching and keeping Medigap.
If you are leaving Medicare Advantage because you moved outside its service area, you may have a guaranteed issue right to buy certain Medigap policies. These protections have eligibility rules and application deadlines. Confirm your rights and effective dates before canceling coverage. Check Medicare’s Medigap purchasing guidance.
Use this checklist before moving day
· Notify your current plans. Ask for written confirmation of any coverage end date, enrollment deadline, and documents you should retain.
· Check medication access. Prepare a list of drug names, strengths, quantities, and refill dates. Discuss refills around your move with your pharmacy and prescriber.
· Arrange ongoing care. Ask how records, referrals, and treatment arrangements will transfer to your new providers.
· Confirm new coverage. Keep enrollment confirmations together and verify the date coverage begins before canceling a policy yourself.
· Update your official address. Medicare directs beneficiaries to Social Security to change their Medicare address, even if they do not receive Social Security payments. Follow Medicare’s address-change instructions.
Common questions about Medicare and moving
What if I spend only part of the year in another state
A seasonal stay and a permanent move can create different coverage questions. Tell your plan how long you expect to be away and ask how routine care works at your second location. Emergency coverage alone does not answer whether regular appointments will be covered there.
Can I keep my current doctor after moving
Ask the practice about your ongoing care arrangements. With Original Medicare, confirm that the provider takes Medicare. With Medicare Advantage, verify the provider’s status under your exact plan and the rules for obtaining care outside its network. Compare provider access.
What happens if my Advantage plan ends before I choose another
If you move outside the service area and do not join another Medicare Advantage plan during the applicable Special Enrollment Period, Medicare says you will return to Original Medicare when the old plan drops you. Review prescription coverage separately rather than assuming it transfers automatically. See Medicare’s Special Enrollment Period guidance.
